Original Petition, No. I
October 26, 1942
Circulated by Frank A. Dickershaid

To The Most Reverend Edmund F. Gibbons, Bishop of Albany

We, the undersigned citizens of the City and County of Schenectady, beg leave to place before you the following facts:

  1. Schenectady City and County have a population of approximately 125,000.
  2. There is but one general hospital in the County. The facilities of this hospital
are woefully inadequate to care for the needs of the community.
  3. Because of over crowded living conditions in Schenectady, there is a real danger of a rapid spread of contagious and infectious diseases. Should an epidemic occur, hundreds would die for lack of hospital care.
  4. It is our understanding that the Diocese of Albany bought property in Schenectady some years ago with the intention of erecting thereon a hospital. If this is so, we respectfully urge that construction of such a hospital be started as soon as possible.

We pledge you our loyal support in any efforts you may make to provide Schenectady with a much needed hospital.
